Augu§5, 18211
I have laid before the Lords Commissioners
of His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Grindle's letter of the 24th of May last (16984/21) on the subject of the
audit of the accounts of Weihaiwei and the China
Postal agencies.
In reply I am to request you to inform the Secretary of State for the Colonies that My Lords would not feel justified in sanctioning the reimburse- ment from Imperial funds of the salary of one of the Assistant Auditors in Hong Kong unless it were clear that no more economical alternative arrangement is
feasible.
With regard to the Weihaiwei Territory Accounts My Lords suggest that the audit might ve undertaken by one of officials of the Territory other
than the Financial Assistant. Mr. Churchill will
be aware that a similar arrangement obtains in
St. Helena.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
